James builds his novel around December 3, 1976, when gunmen attacked Bob Marley's house in Kingston two days before the Smile Jamaica concert. From that night the story radiates across three decades and seventy-five voices — dons and gunmen, CIA men, journalists, ghosts — tracing how Jamaican politics, gangs, and cocaine bound Kingston to Miami and New York. It won the 2015 Man Booker Prize.
