Godfrey Higgins's two-volume Anacalypsis is a vast early nineteenth-century inquiry into the origins of languages, nations, and religions, the fruit of more than twenty years of research. Higgins argued that all later creeds and doctrines sprang from one most ancient and universal religion, tracing religious ideas back to their common source through comparative mythology and ancient history. Long a reference point for later writers on the African and Eastern roots of religion, it remains a foundational text of comparative religion.
