Educator Jeanne L. Noble traces the history of Black women in America from African backgrounds and enslavement through emancipation, migration, work, family life, and the struggles of the twentieth century. One of the first full-length histories devoted to African American women, it recovers the achievements of women long left out of the standard histories. Published by Prentice-Hall in 1978, it helped open the modern field of Black women's history.
