Schuyler's satire begins with a discovery: Dr. Junius Crookman has perfected a treatment that turns Black people white. Max Disher takes the treatment, becomes Matthew Fisher, and rises inside a white supremacist organization even as the country unravels — businesses built on Black consumers collapse, race-baiters lose their living, and everyone scrambles to prove ancestry. The novel caricatures figures in the orbit of Marcus Garvey and W. E. B. Du Bois and remains the sharpest satire of the Harlem Renaissance era.
