The last Harlem Cycle novel Himes completed. In a sweltering Harlem summer, Coffin Ed Johnson and Grave Digger Jones work overlapping cases, including the murder of a white man in a basement room, while three rival movements — a Brotherhood march, a "Black Jesus" procession, and a Black Power rally — converge toward riot. The search for whoever is steering the violence runs into the book's bleak closing image, the blind man of the title firing at random in a subway station.
