Danticat's memoir braids the lives of two brothers: her father, Mira, a New York cab driver dying of pulmonary fibrosis, and her uncle Joseph, a Port-au-Prince pastor who raised Edwidge in Haiti during her parents' years abroad and who, fleeing violence in 2004, sought asylum in the United States and died in immigration detention in Florida. A story of family duty, Haiti, and the two countries' very different ways of letting these men go, it was a National Book Award finalist.
