Woodson's memoir of her own childhood is written in free verse — Greenville, South Carolina, where she was raised in her grandparents' house in the Jim Crow South, and Brooklyn, where her family joined the Great Migration's later wave. The poems track a girl discovering both the world changing around her in the 1960s and 1970s and the words she will make a life from. It won the 2014 National Book Award for Young People's Literature.
