In the early 1930s, Zane Pinchback, a light-skinned reporter for a Harlem Black newspaper, the New Holland Herald, has built his career on a dangerous specialty: passing for white in the South to investigate lynchings — work he calls going "incognegro," modeled on the real investigations Walter White ran for the NAACP. Zane means to retire the act, until his own darker-skinned twin brother is accused of murdering a white woman in Mississippi, and the only way to the truth is one more trip inside the disguise. A tenth-anniversary edition and a prequel followed a decade later.
