Ani examines African spirituality as a living worldview carried through the diaspora — its concepts of spirit, community, and the sacred — and contrasts it with European materialist frames. She argues that this spiritual inheritance is a source of cohesion and survival for African people wherever they were scattered. The book is an early statement of the Africentric cultural theory she later developed at full length in Yurugu.
