Carruthers reflects on the language of ancient Kemet (Egypt) — mdw ntr, "divine speech" — as the carrier of African deep thought from the pharaohs to the present. Combining historiography, linguistics, and philosophy, he argues for taking African intellectual traditions on their own terms and terms of reference. It is a foundational text of the Kemetic studies school he helped build in Chicago.
