A young-adult "remix" of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, set in a rapidly gentrifying Bushwick, Brooklyn. Zuri Benitez, second of five Haitian-Dominican sisters, a poet hoping for Howard University, watches the wealthy Darcy family move into a renovated mini-mansion across the street. Her older sister Janae falls for Ainsley Darcy while Zuri clashes with — and slowly re-reads — his younger brother Darius, and a boy from the block, Warren, complicates every judgement she makes. Zoboi keeps Austen's architecture of first impressions, class, and family while making the stakes contemporary: rent, displacement, code-switching, Afro-Latinx identity, and who gets to claim a neighbourhood as home. Published when Zoboi was a National Book Award finalist for American Street, Pride became a staple school and library retelling.
