Blackmon documents how, for decades after emancipation, Southern governments arrested Black men on contrived charges and leased them as forced labor to mines, mills, farms, and factories โ€” a convict-leasing system that re-enslaved thousands and killed many, with profits flowing to corporations and county governments alike. Built from court records, company archives, and family histories, the book overturns the assumption that slavery ended in 1865. It won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction and was adapted into a PBS documentary.
