Seventeen short stories by the creator of Easy Rawlins, gathered around Black men who do not fit the expected molds — a mailroom clerk hopelessly out of his depth ("Pet Fly," first published in The New Yorker), a man whose sudden weight loss turns out to be illness ("The Good News Is"), a husband unraveling after betrayal, a bank teller reconsidering the job he hates. The collection won the 2021 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work — Fiction.
