Greenberg argues that the first Israelites were in fact native Egyptians — followers of the pharaoh Akhenaten's monotheistic religion — and that the biblical accounts of the period before the Exodus were built out of Egyptian mythology. The book re-reads familiar patriarchal and Exodus narratives against the Egyptian records to make that case.
