Apollo Kagwa, a rare-book dealer in New York, is settling into new fatherhood when his wife Emma begins to act like their baby is not their baby — and then commits an unthinkable act and vanishes. Apollo's search for her drags him through a hidden New York of witchcraft, old immigrant fairy tales, and a monster with a long memory. LaValle's novel turns the changeling legend into a story about parenthood and terror; it won the World Fantasy Award.
