Brit Bennett's second novel follows identical twins Desiree and Stella Vignes, who grow up in Mallard, a fictional Louisiana town founded for light-skinned Black people who refuse to be treated as either white or, in the town's own color-struck hierarchy, ordinarily Black. The sisters run away together at sixteen, then split: Desiree eventually returns to Mallard with a dark-skinned daughter, Jude, while Stella disappears into a new life passing as white, married to a white husband who knows nothing of her past and raising a daughter, Kennedy, who believes herself white. Moving between the 1950s and the 1990s and between Louisiana and California, the novel braids the sisters' stories with their daughters', whose meeting forces Stella's secret toward exposure. Bennett treats passing not as a simple deception but as a set of choices about family, safety, ambition, and self-invention, each carrying a cost paid across generations. The book became an immediate bestseller and a major contemporary treatment of colorism and identity.
