Moore, a Barbadian-American orator, activist, and pioneering collector of Black books, traces the history of the word "Negro" and argues that the name was fastened onto African people during slavery and carries that degradation with it. He makes the case for "Afro-American" as the people's proper self-chosen name. The essay remains a reference point in every later debate over what Black people should call themselves.
