Ani builds a systematic critique of European culture from its own philosophical foundations — its claimed universalism, its drive toward control, and the cultural "seed" (asili) from which its thought and behavior grow — and measures that culture's effects on the rest of the world. The title takes the Dogon figure Yurugu, a symbol of incompleteness and disorder. The book is a foundational text of the African-centered school and standard reading in Black studies programs.
