Ebony senior editor Lerone Bennett Jr. wrote this landmark popular history of Black America, grown out of his Ebony article series and published by Johnson Publishing in 1962. It runs from the African past and the arrival of the first Africans in 1619 through slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the modern freedom movement, with portraits of the major figures throughout. For generations of readers it served as the standard introduction to African American history, kept current through many revised editions.
