A heavily illustrated survey of African civilizations, from ancient Egypt and Nubia through Kush, Axum, and Great Zimbabwe to the medieval empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. Walker — who confirmed his publisher himself in an authors' association interview — wrote it to give general readers, especially young Black readers, one accessible volume of pre-colonial African achievement. It has become one of the most popular Black history survey books published in Britain.
