Graves collects accounts of sixteen crucified savior figures from the world's religions and argues that their stories parallel the life of Jesus โ in birth, miracles, crucifixion, and resurrection. Written from a freethought standpoint, it became one of the most reprinted nineteenth-century challenges to the uniqueness of Christianity. Its comparisons are dated and often loose by modern scholarly standards, but its influence on comparative-religion and Christ-myth debates is lasting.
